Tribological applications of biomaterials: an overview
نویسندگان
چکیده
Tribological research is the study of lubrication, friction, and wear. Tribology of biomaterials is to study how the materials work and fail. This will help us to produce better biomaterials. Tribology plays a very important role in improving the design and making successful biomaterials for medical purposes. Joints of human body, such as hip, knee, jaw, dental parts etc., all need to consider the wear and lubrication problem. In this paper, we give a general introduction of biomaterial research in tribological applications. Materials, the synthetic characterization, and their failure are introduced.

Metals are extensively used in a variety of applications in the medical field for internal support and biological tissue replacements, such as joint replacements, dental roots, orthopedic fixation, and stents. The metals and alloys that are primarily used in biomedical applications are stainless steels, Co alloys, and Ti alloys. The service period of a metallic biomaterial is determined by its ...
متن کاملThe Evaluation of Tribological Properties of Biomaterials Used for Knee Replacements
No known surgical implant material has ever been shown to be completely free of adverse reactions in the human body. However, long-time clinical experience of use of the biomaterials has shown that an acceptable level of biological response can be expected, when the material is used in appropriate applications. This article deals with very specific wear resistance testing of biomaterials used f...
